Disability Legislative Unit
"Nothing about us, without us"
We proactively respond to the present needs of the disability movement. This unit is run by persons with disabilities. Our dream is that if disability is included in all aspects of mainstream life, there would be no need for advocacy.
Disability and the Law
The disability movement has undergone a paradigm shift from the medical model to the human rights model. India has ratified the United Nations Convention for Persons with Disabilities in 2007. However in actual practice, services are being provided for, with little or no consultation with Persons with Disabilities. The demand for this change of approach can be brought about only by the stakeholders themselves. We believe in the capacity of persons with disabilities. Ever since its inception in 1985 the organization has developed programs in response to the needs and evolving disability movement.

While working on aspects of access and inclusion we felt that there was a need for awareness and advocacy at every stage. Initially we had formed an advocacy group, in September 2003, the Disability Legislation Unit (DLU) was started in collaboration with NCPEDP -National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People with focus areas being access, awareness, education, employment and legislation.
